Privacy Policy
How Maniac handles your information — and why most of it never leaves your Mac.
Effective June 16, 2026
Our approach
Maniac is built local-first. The desktop app runs open models directly on your Mac, and by design your conversations, files, and model activity stay on your device. We collect as little as possible, and we never sell your personal information. This policy explains what we do collect, when, and why.
This policy applies to the Maniac desktop application, the maniac.ai website, and our hosted services (together, the "Services"). It does not apply to the third-party apps and accounts you choose to connect, which are governed by their own privacy policies.
Information we collect
We group the data involved in using Maniac by where it lives and how it is handled:
- Data that stays on your device. Your chats, prompts, generated artifacts, local model activity, and agent memory are stored on your Mac (for example, in a local SQLite database in your user data directory). We do not receive this content unless you explicitly use a feature that sends it to us or to a provider you have chosen.
- Account and contact information. If you create an account, join a beta, or contact us, we collect details such as your name, email address, and any messages you send us.
- Connected integrations. When you connect a third-party tool (such as Gmail, Slack, Calendar, or Notion), you authorize access through that provider. Authorization tokens and the data needed to fulfill your requests are processed to make the integration work; we do not retain copies of your third-party content beyond what is needed to run the task you asked for.
- Cloud execution and hosted inference. If you opt into a cloud run or use Maniac Gateway, the prompts, context, and outputs for that request transit and are processed by our cloud infrastructure and the relevant model provider so we can return a result.
- Billing information. If you purchase a paid plan, our payment processor collects the payment details needed to complete the transaction. We receive limited billing metadata (such as plan, status, and the last four digits of a card) but not your full payment card number.
- Diagnostics and usage analytics. We may collect limited, aggregated diagnostic and usage data (such as crash reports, feature usage counts, and app version) to keep the app stable and improve it. Where required, this is subject to your consent and in-app controls.
How we use information
- To provide, maintain, and secure the Services.
- To run the tasks, automations, integrations, and cloud or hosted-inference requests you initiate.
- To process payments and manage subscriptions.
- To diagnose problems, prevent abuse, and improve performance and reliability.
- To communicate with you about updates, security notices, and support.
- To comply with legal obligations and enforce our terms.
We do not use the contents of your local conversations to train our models, and we do not sell your personal information.
How information is shared
We share information only as needed to operate the Services, and we require our providers to protect it:
- Service providers (subprocessors). We use vendors for cloud execution, hosted inference, integration connectivity, database hosting, and payments. They process data on our behalf under contract. A current list is available on our Security & Data page.
- Model and inference providers. When you choose a hosted model or cloud run, the request is sent to the corresponding provider to generate a response.
- Legal and safety. We may disclose information if required by law, to protect our rights and users, or to investigate fraud or security issues.
- Business transfers. If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this policy.
Data retention
On-device data persists on your Mac until you delete it, and you can remove conversations or clear app data at any time. For account, billing, and operational data we hold, we keep it only as long as needed for the purposes described here or as required by law, then delete or anonymize it.
Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain processing. Because most of your content lives on your device, you already control it directly. For data we hold, contact us at tom@maniac.ai and we will respond as required by applicable law. You will not be discriminated against for exercising these rights.
Security
We use technical and organizational measures to protect information, including encryption in transit and access controls for our infrastructure. No system is perfectly secure, but data minimization is our first line of defense: the less that leaves your Mac, the less is ever at risk. See our Security & Data page for details.
International users
We are based in the United States. If you use the hosted Services from outside the U.S., information processed by those services may be transferred to and handled in the U.S. and other countries with different data-protection laws. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards for such transfers.
Children
The Services are not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will post the revised version here and update the effective date above; material changes may be accompanied by additional notice.
